The intensity of the movement

How do you convey to an audience a dance that is shared by two people ? Luis Bruni choreographic work is based on the intensity of dance, on the density of the movement.

It was in his first life, the one as a classical ballet soloist for the Argentinean Theatre of La Plata, that Luis Bruni signed his first choreography in Argentine Tango. In 1996, he composed a choreography for Alejandro Parente, Principal dancer of the Colon Theatre (the Argentinean equivalent of the Opera de Paris). « With Alejandro, comments Luis, we worked inside the music of Piazzola, in the contratempi, the silences. Many choreographers work with the tempo. We wanted to get in the spirit of the music. To dance tango, you don’t need to be a rhythm expert, but rather to be in the spirit of the music. »

In 1997, Luis Bruni composed a short choreography of contemporary tango for the Latin Festival, in Canada. The following year, he opted again for a composition of Piazolla for Pedro Benavente « El Indio » with Mariana Dragone. In 1999, he created a piece for the closing of the Bremenhaven Festival in Germany.

The same year, Oscar Araïz asked Luis Bruni to choreograph a passage of Tango en gris, a score composed by Araïz himself during his tenure as director of the Opera of Geneva.

Since 2001 Luis Bruni has been working with Pascale Coquigny. Together they have created a large choreographic repertoire where we can appreciate the different tango styles ; from the traditional to the more modern tango of today.

In 2002 the Argentinean singer/composer Juan Carlos Caceres asked them to choreograph the famous theme Tango Negro and Murga Portena which is so dear to him and which he wants the world to discover.

In 2003 Luis Bruni and Pascale Coquigny presented a one hour show called Histoires de tango in which they invited the public to travel from the origins of tango up to the present. The Histoires de tango shows how the politics of Argentina have influenced tango, it’s music and it’s danse ; authentic stories far from the usual clichés.
